When I’m Older…

“What are you going to do for the New Year?” the girl asked the boy in the neighbourhood playground.

The girl and the boy swung on the rusty swings while two girls played on the slides and sand pit across from the swings.

“I don’t know,” the boy said.  “I hope something fun.”

“Yeah, I hope we’re going to do something fun, too.”

The next day, the boy and the girl were at the park again, this time with their parents off on the sidelines.  It was late and dark, and the parents talked to one another as they watched their children.

“What did you do today?” the girl asked the boy as they played in the sand pit.

“We didn’t do anything,” the boy said.  “We did eat loads of food, and I stayed up late, and we cheered ‘Happy New Year!’ when midnight came.”

“That sounded like so much fun!  We just ate a lot of food and slept in.”

“When I’m an adult, I’m going to do so much on New Year’s Day,” the boy said.  “I’m going to go out and party with my friends!”  The boy sounded excited.

“Yeah, me too!” the girl said, and they continued playing together until it was time to go home.
